In June 2018, following the catastrophic fire at the world-renowned Glasgow School of Art, Glasgow City Council appointed Protec FM to work alongside their demolition contractor. The task was urgent and complex: provide immediate emergency security and long-term site protection during investigations and demolition.
The Challenge
The site posed multiple challenges:
- A dangerous structure requiring strict exclusion zones.
- Widespread public and media interest.
- The safety of residents, businesses, and visitors in the surrounding area.
- Maintaining access for investigators, contractors, and emergency services.
Our Response
Within just two hours of notification, Protec FM deployed four 24/7 standby security officers to the site. This rapidly expanded to a full team of eight officers on constant rotation – the equivalent of 32 full-time staff.
Our officers delivered:
- 24/7 manned guarding to protect the site.
- Road and pavement closures in collaboration with authorities.
- Evacuation procedures and crowd management to ensure public safety.
- Close liaison with police, fire services, and emergency teams.
Managing Stakeholders & Pressures
The high-profile nature of the fire meant our team worked in an environment of intense scrutiny. We engaged daily with a wide range of stakeholders:
- Public officials, insurance representatives, and contractors.
- Members of the public, local businesses, and residents affected by access restrictions.
- National and international press, protest groups, and campaigners.
Our role went far beyond static security. Officers needed to diffuse potential flashpoints, protect the integrity of the site for investigation, and ensure safe access for the Scottish Fire and Rescue Service.
The Outcome
We are proud to say Protec FM was commended for our co-operative and collaborative approach, building trust with stakeholders while maintaining site security under extraordinary circumstances.
By combining rapid mobilisation, round-the-clock presence, and skilled stakeholder management, Protec FM ensured the safety, security, and compliance of one of Scotland’s most high-profile sites.
